Filmed at Allegheny Ludlum, this footage opens with a blooming mill shaping a steel ingot. Later in the clip, a worker feeds a billet into the mill. Blooms can be used to make structural steel and rails, while billets are used to make products like wire, pipes, and tubes.
Allegheny Ludlum was created as the result of a 1938 merger between Allegheny Steel of Pittsburgh and Ludlum Steel of Watervliet, New York. The company traces its lineage back to the Revolutionary War years, when one its predecessors, New Jersey’s Pompton Furnace, sold cannonballs to the Continental Army. Now known as Allegheny Technologies, the company is one of the few remaining steel companies left in the area. |
